# AI contract management agent with OpenClaw

Budi Voogt Nov 06, 2026

Copy for LLM

An artificial intelligence (AI) contract management agent with OpenClaw lives on your own machine and talks to you in Telegram, WhatsApp or Slack. Ask it whether you can still cancel the Pipewell customer relationship management (CRM) subscription. It answers that notice is due by 15 January, that the contract then renews for a year with fees up to 6% higher, and that a reminder is set for 5 January. Contracko does the expert work: AI contract analysis of every document, the dates, the reminders and the risk review. The agent does the legwork.

OpenClaw is an open-source personal agent maintained by the OpenClaw Foundation and released under the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) licence [1]. You run its gateway yourself and choose the model behind it, from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or a local one [1].

## Why contracts deserve their own agent

OpenClaw can run several agents side by side. Each has its own workspace, its own SOUL.md describing who it is and its own sessions, and a channel binding decides which chats reach it [3]. That fits contract work, which has its own sources, its own memory and its own calendar.

For a person, the agent tracks the lease, the insurance and the subscriptions that renew quietly. For a small business, it acts like a part-time contract manager.

The split of work is what makes AI contract management with an agent reliable. Contracko does the AI extraction and analysis: parties, dates, renewal terms, notice periods, values, liabilities, obligations and risk. See [Contracko's AI contract analysis](https://contracko.com/features/ai-contract-analysis). The agent reads that analysis, and the contract text when it needs the exact wording, and handles the rest:

- finds documents on the machine it runs on or in a synced cloud storage folder
- uploads them to Contracko and checks when each import has finished
- checks the contract type of each new contract, fixes it when it is wrong and re-runs the analysis
- files contracts in folders and adds missing counterparty contacts
- sets reminders, builds reports and messages you what needs attention

The two connect through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for linking AI agents to apps, explained in [what a contract management MCP server is](https://contracko.com/blog/what-is-a-contract-management-mcp-server). This guide connects Contracko's [contract management MCP server](https://contracko.com/mcp/contract-management).

## A contracts agent in your chat

An illustrative exchange in Telegram. The companies and data are fictional.

```
What needs notice in the next 60 days? Include anything that renews on its own.
```

| Contract | Counterparty | Notice due | Renews |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Office lease, unit 4B | Marlow Estates | 28 December | Yes, for 3 years |
| Fleet insurance | Calder Mutual | 2 January | Yes, yearly |
| CRM subscription | Pipewell | 15 January | Yes, yearly, fees up to 6% higher |

The agent adds that the lease notice must go by registered post, which Contracko found in the termination clause, and asks whether you want a reminder 10 days before each date.

## Set up your contract agent

You need a running OpenClaw gateway. OpenClaw itself is free, with no paid tier [1]. A hosted model or a rented server can cost money, depending on the provider and plan; a local model uses your own hardware instead.

### Connect the Contracko MCP server

OpenClaw supports remote MCP servers with Open Authorization (OAuth) sign-in [2]. Run openclaw mcp status --verbose first: if a contracko entry is already saved, reuse it rather than adding a second one [6]. Otherwise Contracko's setup documentation gives three commands for the gateway host [6]:

```
openclaw mcp set contracko '{"url":"https://app.contracko.com/mcp","transport":"streamable-http"}'
openclaw mcp configure contracko --auth oauth
openclaw mcp login contracko
```

They save the server, switch it to OAuth and start Contracko's sign-in, which you finish in your browser. If that browser runs on another machine or cannot reach the printed address, pass the returned code back with openclaw mcp login contracko --code <returned-code> [2]. You can also add the server in the gateway's Control user interface (UI) under MCP settings [2], or ask the agent to do it with this prompt:

```
Fetch and follow the setup instructions for Contracko MCP at https://contracko.com/mcp/install/prompt.md
```

openclaw mcp status --verbose then shows whether sign-in is complete, and openclaw mcp doctor contracko --probe opens a live connection to Contracko [2]. Finally, ask the agent to refresh its tools and run Contracko's read-only sign-in check, which names the workspace it is connected to [6]. The endpoint for any other method is:

```
https://app.contracko.com/mcp
```

When Contracko asks what to allow, give read and write access to your contracts from the start. With read access alone the agent can answer questions but cannot import, file or set a reminder.

The sign-in screen lists Contracko's two products:

- Contract management is your contract repository: contracts, dates, reminders, folders, analysis and reports. Your agent uses this, and it never spends Parser credits.
- Contracko Parser is a separate bulk document tool. Leave it off.

### Create the contracts agent

Add a new BotFather bot to OpenClaw as a Telegram account called contracts [3]. Stop the gateway, which adding a bound agent requires, then create the agent with its own workspace and bind that account to it [3]:

```
openclaw agents add contracts --workspace ~/.openclaw/workspace-contracts --bind telegram:contracts
```

The binding sends every chat on that bot account to the contracts agent; a binding for one specific chat takes precedence [3]. Start the gateway again and check the routing with openclaw agents list --bindings. If another agent already owns that binding, OpenClaw names the conflict. Resolve it with openclaw agents bind and openclaw agents unbind instead of creating the agent again [3].

Then write the job into AGENTS.md in the agent's workspace, where OpenClaw keeps operating rules. SOUL.md is for voice and style.

```
You run my contracts in Contracko. Keep the contract repository complete, correctly typed and filed, and tell me what needs a decision before it is due. Quote the clause behind each finding.
```

There are no approval rules here, because the agent works on its own. Contracko checks two things on every write: the access you approved at sign-in and your own workspace permissions [6]. Deleting a report or removing part of one also needs your explicit approval. MCP servers in OpenClaw are saved for the whole gateway with one sign-in, so other agents on it may reach Contracko too, depending on their runtime and tool policy [2].

### Install the Contracko skill

A skill teaches an agent to use a tool well. Contracko's skill, contracko, covers importing, filing, checking types and reviewing dates. Contracko's setup documentation installs it on an OpenClaw host with one command [6]:

```
npx skills@latest add contracko/contracko-skills
```

Then ask the contracts agent which skills it can use. OpenClaw loads skills from the agent's workspace and from shared folders, subject to each agent's skill allowlist, and openclaw skills check shows why a skill is missing for an agent [1].

## Build a contract repository with tracking

This is the agent's main job: one contract repository whose dates and reminders keep running when the gateway is off. New to the idea? Start with [what a contract repository is](https://contracko.com/blog/contract-repository-guide).

### Bring the pile in

The agent can work with files on its machine, including a synced Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive folder.

```
Go through ~/Documents/Contracts and the synced folder ~/Google Drive/Agreements. Import every signed contract into Contracko, wait until each import is done, and list anything that failed.
```

Contracko reads each document, creates the contract and links it to an existing or new counterparty. The longer walkthrough is in [how to import and organise contracts with MCP](https://contracko.com/blog/extract-contract-data-with-mcp).

### What Contracko extracts for you

Contracko extracts the parties, start, end and renewal dates, notice periods, payment terms and values, and its analysis highlights liabilities, obligations and unusual terms. A contract type can carry its own fields, such as the deposit on a lease, and extraction fills those too.

Contracko records auto-renewal and the renewal period separately from the end date, and keeps the notice period as a set time before it. See [contract dates and auto-renewals](https://contracko.com/docs/contract-dates).

### Fix types and folders

```
For every contract imported today, check the contract type. Correct any that are wrong and re-run the analysis, then file each contract under Clients, Suppliers, Property or Insurance.
```

After a type change, the agent asks Contracko to read the document again. Contracko shows the new values as proposals, and you approve them in the app.

### Reminders and calendar dates

```
Add a reminder 21 days before the notice deadline of every contract that renews automatically.
```

Reminders live in Contracko and arrive by email, even if your gateway is down. More prompts are in [contract renewal reminders with MCP](https://contracko.com/blog/contract-renewal-reminders-with-mcp).

Contracko's [calendar feed](https://contracko.com/features/calendar-integration) adds these dates to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook; see the [calendar setup guide](https://contracko.com/docs/calendar-integration).

## AI contract analysis for any agreement

Contracko has already analysed each agreement, so the agent starts from that analysis, reads the contract text for the exact wording and quotes the sentence behind each point. Where the analysis and the text do not settle a point, it should say so.

```
Explain the Marlow Estates lease in plain language: rent reviews, who repairs what, and how I get out of it.
```

An illustrative answer, with fictional data:

| Point | What Contracko found | Clause |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Rent review | Every 2 years, linked to inflation | "The Rent shall be reviewed in line with inflation on each second anniversary of the Term Commencement Date." |
| Repairs | Tenant repairs the interior | "The Tenant shall keep the interior of the Premises in good repair." |
| Exit | Break option on the third anniversary, at least 6 months' notice | "The Tenant may terminate this Lease on the third anniversary by giving not less than six months' notice." |

The chat version of this job is in [AI contract review with MCP](https://contracko.com/blog/ai-contract-review-with-mcp).

## AI contract review for risk and obligations

AI contract review across the portfolio asks one question of every agreement.

```
Which of my supplier contracts have uncapped liability or let the supplier change prices on its own? Sort by renewal date.
```

```
What do I owe under my client contracts in the next 90 days? Payments, deliverables, reports and notices.
```

Illustrative findings for the second prompt, with fictional data:

| Obligation | Owed to | Due |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Monthly service report | Heron Logistics | 5th of each month |
| Proof of liability insurance | Marlow Estates | 31 January |
| 30 days' notice of staff changes | Fenwick Dental Group | Before any change |

Each finding starts from Contracko's risk and obligations analysis [5]. The agent quotes the clause so you can check the wording. For the wider practice, see [contract risk management](https://contracko.com/glossary/contract-risk-management).

## Reports that stay current

Contracko builds [reports](https://contracko.com/features/reporting) from the data in your account, and they update as contracts change. The agent builds reports from Contracko's report templates and fields, such as contracts ending soon, annual value by counterparty or contracts by type. It previews each part first and saves the report privately in your account.

```
Create a Contracko report of the contracts ending in the next 6 months, with counterparty, end date and annual value. Show me the preview, then save it and tell me its name.
```

Whoever opens it next month sees next month's numbers.

## Five workflows to run on a routine

OpenClaw schedules work as automations, also available under the older name cron. A job can run at a set time, at an interval or on a cron schedule, in its own isolated session, and post its result to a chat [4]. Jobs run only while the gateway is running, on the gateway host's timezone unless you name one [4]. When the automations tool is available, you can set a job up by asking for it in chat. A job created from a chat reports back to that chat, unless you name another destination or have set a default one [4]. Ask the agent to show the saved schedule and destination before you rely on a job.

OpenClaw's old heartbeat is now an automation called "Proactive check" for the agent that owns your everyday conversations; openclaw doctor --fix converts supported heartbeat settings and reports what it cannot convert [4]. Give contract work its own automations, each with a clear time and output.

### Onboard everything once

```
Find every signed contract in ~/Documents and my synced cloud storage folders. Import each into Contracko and wait for every import. Fix any wrong contract type and re-run the analysis. File each contract by client, supplier or household category, then tell me how many you imported, where they went and what failed.
```

### Watch a folder for new contracts

```
Create an automation that runs every weekday at 07:00 in an isolated session. Check the synced folder ~/Google Drive/Agreements for files that are not yet in Contracko. Import each one, wait for the import, check the contract type and file it. Post one line in this chat with what you imported, or nothing if there was nothing new.
```

Contracko tells the agent when a document is already linked to a contract, and adds a second copy only if you insist. A file whose import failed is not in Contracko yet, so the next run tries it again.

### Catch signed contracts in your inbox

OpenClaw's email plugin starts a separate session for each new message from senders you allow, such as @docusign.net. By default a message also has to pass sender authentication, with a sender-bound token as the documented exception, and the first start skips mail already in the box [4]. So start with a one-off audit: export the completed documents from DocuSign, Adobe Sign or PandaDoc into a folder and run the onboarding prompt on it.

For new arrivals, OpenClaw's documentation has you set up a separate reader agent first: sandboxed, with almost no tools, which needs a sandbox backend and a working model [4]. It can summarise a message but cannot import anything, deliberately: an email can carry instructions you did not write. Its summaries are silent in the documented example. To hear when a contract has been signed, turn on delivery for that mailbox, send yourself a test message and check in the logs that the run completed and the summary was delivered [4]. Save the signed copy to the watched folder for the weekday automation, then give the contracts agent the details:

```
Pipewell signed the CRM renewal. Their contact is Dana Reyes, account manager, dana@pipewell.example. Check that the contract is in Contracko, add her as the counterparty contact and confirm in one line.
```

### Get a weekly deadline digest

```
Create an automation for every Monday at 08:00 in an isolated session. List every contract with a notice deadline or end date in the next 60 days, with the date and the decision I need to make. Add any contract imported last week that has no end date or no contract type. Post it in this chat.
```

### Share reports with your team

Connect Slack as an OpenClaw channel first. Automations post to a Slack channel by its identifier (ID), in the form channel:C0123456 [4].

```
Create a Contracko report with two parts: the contracts ending in the next 6 months, sorted by annual value, and their total annual value. Show me the preview before you save it. Then create an automation for 09:00 Amsterdam time on the 1st of each month that previews both parts again and posts to Slack channel:C0123456 how many contracts end, their total annual value and the three largest. Show me the saved schedule.
```

A Contracko report stays private until you share it. Before you share it, check who will see it: a shared report can show contract data to people who cannot open those contracts. The [reporting overview](https://contracko.com/features/reporting) explains share links.

List your jobs with openclaw automations list --all, which includes jobs that were switched off, and check a job's history with openclaw automations runs and the job ID, which shows whether each run finished and was delivered [4]. By default OpenClaw raises an alert after two failed runs in a row, depending on its routing settings, and a recurring scheduled job that fails ten runs in a row is switched off [4]. A failed delivery is not a failed run, and neither is a run in which the model only reports a problem, so check the run history and read the digests themselves.

## What your agent can and cannot do

The agent acts as you, in the workspace you chose at sign-in, and cannot open a contract you cannot open yourself. Every write needs the write access you approved and your own workspace permission [6]. Everything it creates or changes is marked as coming from MCP in Contracko's activity history [5].

It cannot delete a contract, a document, a folder, a counterparty or a contract type; that only happens in the Contracko app. It can remove only custom dates, reminders, reports and report parts, and reports or their parts only after you approve.

Disconnect at any time in Contracko under Settings, then Integrations, then MCP Connections [6]. The [MCP server documentation](https://contracko.com/docs/mcp-server) covers the rest.

One caveat is specific to OpenClaw. MCP servers are saved for the whole gateway, not per agent, so other agents on the same gateway may be able to use Contracko, depending on their runtime and tool policy [2]. Agent workspaces are not sandboxes either, and agents can see each other's sessions by default. OpenClaw's own advice for strict separation is a separate gateway [3], so give other people's agents their own.

Contracko does not train models on your contracts [6]. With OpenClaw, conversation content goes to the model provider you chose, so check that provider's training settings before you connect real contracts.

## Why a connection beats pasting

An agent without a connection only knows the files you last showed it. Connected to Contracko, it works from current records, so Monday's digest describes this week's portfolio.

## Frequently asked questions

How do I connect OpenClaw to a contract management MCP server?

If no Contracko entry is saved yet, run openclaw mcp set with the Contracko endpoint, openclaw mcp configure to switch on OAuth, then openclaw mcp login to sign in through your browser. From then on you talk to the agent in plain language. Setting up OpenClaw takes some comfort with a terminal.

How do businesses track contract renewal dates automatically?

They keep every contract in a repository that knows each renewal and notice date. Here the agent imports the contracts, Contracko extracts the dates and sends reminders, and a weekly automation lists what is coming up.

Can I try free AI contract review before setting up the agent?

Yes. Contracko's [free AI contract review](https://contracko.com/tools/contract-review) tool checks a single document. It is separate from the agent, which works inside your Contracko account.

Does the agent use Parser credits, and which plan do I need?

No. Your contracts agent uses Contracko's contract management tools, which never spend Parser credits. For current plans, see [pricing](https://contracko.com/pricing). OpenClaw has no paid tier [1]. Availability in your country depends on the model provider and chat channels you choose.

Who makes OpenClaw, and does it send my contracts anywhere?

The OpenClaw Foundation maintains it [1]. A local model keeps inference on your machine; a hosted one receives your conversations. Either way, the channels and MCP servers you connect, such as Telegram or Contracko, receive what you send them. OpenClaw's update checks carry no message content, though the update service records an approximate location, and an identifier-free count request can follow a check. Set update.checkOnStart: false or OPENCLAW_NO_AUTO_UPDATE=1 to stop automatic update requests [1].
