Reminder guidance for this contract type

A PPA is a long contract with a few decisive dates buried in it

Power purchase agreements run for years, sometimes a decade or more, which makes it easy to treat them as set-and-forget. They are not. Buried in that long term are a handful of dates that decide the economics: the extension or renewal election window, where you choose whether to lock in continued supply; the price re-opener, where the contracted rate can be reset against a benchmark or index; and the term-end date itself, after which supply may simply stop unless a renewal was negotiated in advance. Because these moments are spaced far apart and framed as options rather than obligations, they slip easily off the radar until the window has closed. By then the choice has been made by default — supply lapses, or the rate resets, without anyone having decided it should. Tracking each election and re-opener as its own dated reminder turns a passive long-term contract into a series of deliberate decisions.

The REC true-up is a separate obligation from the energy

Many corporate PPAs are signed as much for the renewable energy certificates as for the electricity, because the RECs are what back public sustainability and net-zero claims. Those certificates carry their own reconciliation cycle: a periodic true-up that compares the RECs actually delivered against the contracted volume and settles any shortfall or surplus, often with a payment attached. The true-up has a hard deadline, and missing it has consequences that are easy to underestimate — an unreconciled shortfall can undermine the very sustainability claim the PPA was meant to support, or trigger a settlement charge. Because it sits on the environmental side of the contract rather than the pricing side, it is frequently tracked by a different team than the one watching the rate, or by no one at all. Surfacing the REC true-up date next to the price and renewal dates keeps the whole deal accounted for.
