Reminder guidance for this contract type

A bond protects you only until its claim deadline

A performance bond exists to cover the cost of a contractor failing to deliver. But the protection is time-boxed: bonds carry a validity period, and most require any claim to be made before that period ends, sometimes with an additional notice step. The risk is subtle. A project drifts, performance issues mount, everyone assumes the bond is there as a backstop, and then the validity period quietly lapses with no claim made. At that point the security is gone. Tracking the claim deadline as a distinct reminder, ahead of the bond expiry, is what keeps the backstop usable.

Releasing a bond too early or too late both cost money

The release side matters as much as the claim side. Hold a contractor's bond past the point it should be returned and you tie up their capacity and strain the relationship. Release it before defects are signed off and you give up leverage on outstanding work. The right release date is tied to certified completion and the defects sign-off, not a guess. A reminder that surfaces the release condition at completion, with an owner to authorize it, keeps the bond in force exactly as long as the contract intends, no longer, no shorter.
