Reminder guidance for this contract type

Why insurance expirations need their own workflow

Business insurance policies don't behave like contracts. The expiration date is fixed, but the renewal process starts much earlier β€” often 45 to 60 days before the policy ends β€” because the insurer needs updated underwriting information. The renewal packet has its own deadline. Certificates of insurance, which prove the coverage to customers and partners, are distributed on a different cadence. Missing any of those triggers a coverage gap that's hard to backfill. A useful expiration reminder for insurance separates the policy date, the underwriting deadline, and the certificate distribution into distinct reminders.

Coverage gaps cost more than the policy itself

A lapsed business policy can disqualify the company from active customer contracts that require continuous coverage. It can trigger penalty clauses in vendor agreements. It can void warranty claims that depend on insured status. The financial cost of the gap is rarely the missed premium β€” it's the second-order consequences: contracts that pause, customers that withhold payment, claims that get denied. Tracking the renewal packet deadline as a distinct reminder, separate from the policy expiration, is what stops the gap from forming in the first place.
