MSAs renew differently because they contain other contracts
A master service agreement isn't a single contract — it's a frame that other contracts (order forms, statements of work, schedules) live inside. The MSA's renewal date is the most visible, but the more interesting dates are the renewals of the order forms beneath it. If an order form is mid-term when the MSA expires, the rules for that order form usually keep applying. If the MSA is renewed on different terms, those new terms only apply to new order forms. Useful MSA reminder tooling tracks the parent agreement and every active child contract separately.
The order-form drift problem
Most MSAs are signed once and then quietly modified through new order forms over the years. By renewal time, the actual commercial relationship is governed by a stack of order forms with different terms, different pricing, and different end dates — none of which match the MSA itself. The MSA renewal becomes an opportunity to audit that drift: which order forms are still active, which terms should be folded back into a refreshed master, which schedules need to be retired. Without that audit, MSA renewals just extend the existing complexity instead of cleaning it up.
